This is a blank starting point, not a completed assessment. It only satisfies your legal duty once every row has been filled in accurately, with the correct safety data sheet references, for your own substances.
🧪 Using multiple hazardous substances on one job? List them all — we'll assess each substance separately, reference the relevant safety data sheets, and specify the control measures required under Regulation 7 of COSHH 2002.
Legal Requirements for COSHH Assessments
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) require employers and the self-employed to assess the risks from hazardous substances and implement adequate control measures. Regulation 6 places a duty to conduct a suitable and sufficient COSHH assessment before work begins. Regulation 7 requires that exposure to hazardous substances is prevented or, where prevention is not reasonably practicable, adequately controlled.
COSHH applies to substances including chemicals (cleaning products, solvents, adhesives), dusts (from cutting, sanding, drilling), fumes (welding, hot work), biological agents (sewage, mould, legionella) and any substance with a hazard classification under the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation. If a substance has a safety data sheet, it is almost certainly covered by COSHH.
Under Regulation 12, employers must provide adequate information, instruction and training to employees exposed to hazardous substances. This includes how to read safety data sheets, how to use control measures correctly, and what to do in an emergency. A written COSHH assessment is the foundation of compliance and is expected by HSE inspectors, principal contractors, and insurance providers.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 also applies — employers have a duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees and others who may be affected by their work. A COSHH assessment demonstrates that this duty has been met for work involving hazardous substances.
How It Works

1. Describe the Substances and Task
Tell us the hazardous substances you use (chemical names, product names), the task you're doing (cleaning, welding, spraying), and the work environment (enclosed space, well-ventilated workshop, outdoor site). If you have safety data sheets, reference them — we'll incorporate the controls specified.

2. Let the app take the strain
Anyrisks produces a fully written, UK-compliant COSHH risk assessment referencing the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, relevant Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs), and safety data sheet requirements.

3. Instant Download and Use
Download as PDF and editable Word document. Hand it to your client, contractor or facilities manager, include it in your RAMS pack, or file it for HSE compliance. £29, no subscription.
What It Covers
Every COSHH assessment is written in full — covering all hazardous substances and control measures relevant to your work.
Hazardous substance identification and CLP classification
Safety data sheet (SDS) requirements and interpretation
Inhalation, skin contact and ingestion exposure routes
Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) and exposure monitoring
Hierarchy of control — elimination, substitution, engineering controls
Ventilation requirements (local exhaust ventilation, general ventilation)
Personal protective equipment (gloves, respirators, eye protection)
Dermatitis and skin sensitisation prevention
Spillage and emergency procedures
Storage and handling requirements (DSEAR compliance where relevant)
Health surveillance requirements under Regulation 11
Training and competence requirements under Regulation 12
Waste disposal and environmental controls
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 compliance

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this cover COSHH compliance for electrical contractors?
Yes — if you use cable lubricants, solvents, thermal compounds, or work with materials producing dust or fumes (drilling, cutting), describe these substances and we will include COSHH controls, safety data sheet references, and ventilation requirements in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.
Can I use this for cleaning company COSHH assessments?
Absolutely — describe the cleaning chemicals you use (bleach, degreasers, sanitisers), the work environment (offices, healthcare, schools), and we will produce a fully written COSHH assessment covering dermatitis prevention, PPE, ventilation and emergency procedures.
Does it cover substances with no safety data sheet?
Yes — for substances like dust from cutting or drilling, welding fumes, or biological hazards, describe the substance and its source. We will include exposure controls and health surveillance requirements where relevant under Regulation 6 and Regulation 11 of COSHH 2002.
Is training and competence covered in the assessment?
Yes — COSHH assessments include training requirements for handling hazardous substances safely, understanding safety data sheets, and emergency response. Regulation 12 of COSHH 2002 requires adequate information, instruction and training for employees exposed to hazardous substances.
Can I use it for asbestos work?
No — asbestos is regulated separately under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and requires specialist licensing. Anyrisks does not cover licensed asbestos removal. For non-licensed asbestos work (e.g. minor maintenance where asbestos may be disturbed), describe the task and material and we will include appropriate controls.
Does it reference WEL values and exposure limits?
Yes — where Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) are defined by HSE for specific substances (e.g. solvents, dusts, vapours), the assessment will reference the relevant WEL and specify control measures to ensure exposure remains below the limit in accordance with Schedule 1 of COSHH 2002.
How quickly can I get my COSHH assessment?
Under 2 minutes. Describe the substances you use, the task, and the work environment. Anyrisks produces a complete, regulation-referenced COSHH risk assessment instantly.
Can I add my own logo and company details?
Yes — you receive the assessment as an editable Word document. Add your company logo, header, footer, and branding before handing it to clients or filing it for compliance purposes.
